 Congratulations to the latest President's Choice award winner—Alliant Techsystems (ATK)—for its new recruitment materials. ATK has worked with GLS account executive Leif Taubenberger since the early '90s. When the company's design firm started work on a striking, yet technically challenging package, ATK turned to GLS to make it happen.
The folder features two large vertical pockets inside with special diecut elements, including an oval slit on the left panel to hold the accompanying recruitment brochure, which GLS also printed. A collage of photos runs across the top of the folder, both inside and out, with a “ticker tape” of words and phrases underneath.
The “ticker tape” effect proved challenging, as GLS had to account for the tolerances of the scoring, folding and die-cutting to make sure the crossovers matched. Taubenberger felt that machine converting would compromise the piece, so he elected to have each of the 5,000 folders hand finished, ensuring that the crossovers would match perfectly on each piece.
When it came to printing, both the folder and accompanying #10-sized brochure featured full bleeds of metallic ink. The original design called for a high percentage screen across most of the pieces, with a solid bar along the bottom. During the press check, it was clear to both Taubenberger and the design firm that the screens would not achieve the desired effect. At GLS' suggestion, the high percentage screens were changed to a solid, and a 20 percent screen of black was added to the bottom bar, giving the piece a similar feel with a much cleaner look.
